Alternative 4 - The Obscurants"The fight for disclosure and justice"With "The Obscurants", Alternative 4 - the current main sphere of Duncan Patterson (ex Anathema, ex Antimatter) - release their second full-length album and continue the line of enquiry that began with their debut "The Brink" in 2011. Like its predecessor, "The Obscurants" stands out due to Patterson's particular songwriting style, which is occasionally echoing the works of his previous bands, yet it is offering his most mature and sophisticated material to date. The album explores avenues such as soft 1960s tremolo vibes, analogue synths and vocoders, to cranked up distorted guitars, with new lead singer Simon Flatley's crooner-like vocals perfectly completing the album's musical expression. Lyrically "The Obscurants" turns out to be a thought-provoking concept album on the subject of cover ups. Be it the media, police, government, or personal deceptions, it's about the obscuring of the

daily deVIIationThank you very much, myraincheck, for featuring Postcard from Vienna...with LOVE as my 7th Daily Deviation! I'm particularly proud of this DD feature, because it's been one of my very rare attempts on Street Photography. At the same time I'd like to dedicate this DD feature to my grandma Emily, who passed away on 28 October 2013. I'll always love you, grandma! Previous DD features: Thank you very much for your constant support, even if I barely have the time to be online nowadays. My job, my life and my mind keep me busier than I'd like to and I'm usually way too exhausted in the evenings to spend my very short free time online. I'm looking forward to have a week off by the end of November and I'll try to catch up on your work an

Until then I'd like to share this video with you (thanks to JtheQ for pointing me to that video) in which Kevin Breel talks about his mental illness. It's a matter close to my heart to help raising awareness for this issue...caus
the*kickplate*project on KickstarterHey there everybody, long time no see here on WhoNeedsColour. For those of you who have wondered about the monthly feature: we had to skip it for personal reasons but I promise we'll be back by the mid of September with a double feature. Be warned! Today, I'd like to introduce Zosia and Dafydd, aka zosiaq and thesadstork. A few months ago they have started the*kickplate*project, a temporary gallery in their hometown of Abertillery, Wales. You can find more information about their project on their blog. By now they have organised two exhibitions, "Visitors" and "behind her "I"s". But idealism and creative ideas usually don't pay bills, and that's where you come into play. For their upcoming "Collaborators" exhibition, Zosia and Dafydd have started a
I Have A DreamI say to you today, my friends, so even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream.I have a dream that one day the whole world will rise up, and live out the true meaning of the US creed: ‘We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal.’I have a dream that one day on the hills of Afghanistan the sons of former warlords and the sons of former occupiers will be able to sit down together at a table of brotherhood.I have a dream that one day even the state of Syria, a state sweltering with the heat of injustice and sweltering with the heat of oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice.I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a world where they will not be judged by the color of their skin or the content of their email and text messages but by the c
Collection: In The Shadow of DragonShare|ArchiveIn The Shadow of Dragons"Is the time of daring deeds forgotten, and spent the fire of men? The bravery sheathed, the proud hearts withered? In the scorched trails of our foes’ fury, even wizards’ spells knelt and warriors’ will bent; yet Dawn’s struggle beneath the burning clouds, within the shadow of dragons, has won her the eastern sky. Shall battle drums thunder once more, and mithril–clad soldiers brave again the terrors of the skies?"— HtBlack of theWrittenRevolution
Collection: Alternative UniverseShare|ArchiveAlternative UniverseThe “alternative universe” has long been a sci–fi trope, usually simply a good–guy bad–guy heroes and villains reversal. Like the Star Trek episode (“Mirror, Mirror”) in which a transporter glitch lands Kirk on an evil pirate “parallel universe” Enterprise where Spock is a goateed murderer with mutiny on his agenda. But real scientists have complicated things considerably, with “string theory” positing at least eleven (and possibly an infinite number) of “alternative/parallel universes.”Once upon a time, we pondered our relative insignificance as sin

Animals Within, Spirit AnimalsShare|ArchiveAnimals Within Spirit AnimalsBy suzymaeHanuman by moleeRead MoreThere has always been this obsession with the others we share this planet with.We communicate with them on certain basic levels and yet they inhabit a plane so different from ours: savage, instinctive, a life of sheer survival. Collection: The Steampunk MenagerieShare|ArchiveThe Steampunk MenagerieThe magic of thousands of years of natural selection and other evolutionary factors has created in all living creatures pretty much the optimal version of each for where each fits in the world. But never tell a human being, especially a steampunk, that there’s no need to fix what isn’t broken. Here’s a collection of interesting imaginings of mechanical steampunk replacements for the somewhat mundane denizens of the actual natural world. For some people, especially some artists, until there’s been an upgrade or enhancement to anything, there just isn’t any “there” there.

Collection: Good Luck CharmsShare|ArchiveLucky CharmsThe first “lucky charms” may have been items like personal rosaries and crucifixes blessed by priests. Over time, the blessing became less important than the object itself. It seems there are lucky charms endemic to all peoples in all places on Earth, from four-leaf clovers to a rabbit's paw. One such talisman would be the lucky horseshoe, nailed above thresholds with points up – to catch good luck floating by. If you have any coin, button, medallion or other trinket in your pocket when you experience good luck, then voila! – you have a lucky charm as good as any!
