How would you explain the concept of abstraction/surrealism to someone who has never heard of it before?
An abstract picture (maybe less so a surrealistic picture) requires the imagination, ideas and mind of those who watch it. Such it is not a one way street which transports the artist‘s vision to the watcher, but can at its best be a bidirectional process by giving the watcher the chance to be creative as well.

The term abstract comes from the Latin word abstrahere (to draw away) and refers to the concept of abstraction. In abstract art it means that the artists uses a visual language of form, color and line to create an image which is almost free from any references in the visual world. Related terms are nonfigurative art, nonobjective art and nonrepresentational art.

In abstract photography the actual subject doesn’t matter much – it’s not important what you see but how you see and feel a picture. This is why abstract artists often refuse to reveal the subject of their photographs or even the used technique. They prefer not to distract the viewer from the deeper concept of their artwork. Wow, this year has gone so fast...

My term as a Community Volunteer is over, I have to take off my "^" and have to say goodbye to the Community Relations team. I have to admit that it was difficult at times to keep up with everything here on deviantART besides my full-time job, but I enjoyed working with the team and I particularly enjoyed the great support from the community in terms of DD suggestions, supportive comments and feedback on journal features and articles during the PE Week back in August.
