For me it's a symbol for covering up unpleasant things (like actual problems, memories, bad emotions, etc.) with something seemingly beautiful. Searching for distraction, no matter if in real life or in (day)dreams, is a certain kind of self-betrayal. Your problems will remain if you don't work on a solution, your memories will remain if you don't let go, your emotions will finally eat you up if you don't let them out. And the snow will melt in springtime and reveal all the ugliness that has been covered.
