| Florian Schmidt is a self-taught photographer based in his native town Bad Arolsen, Germany. He was born in 1979 and made a vocational training as a public employee after he graduated from school. Nowadays he's working for the local municipality. He discovered his love for photography as a teenager when he got his first pocket camera, but lost his hobby out of sight throughout the years. Being diagnosed as suffering from Major Depressive Disorder marked a drastic change in his young life, and he started to search for opportunities to make the best out of it. In 2010 he realized that grabbing the camera and going on extensive photowalks helped him better than any meds or therapy, so he decided to focus more on his hobby again and made more serious attempts on photography. At the same time he started to publish his work online, mostly on deviantART, art limited and Shadowness. He hasn't developed a certain "style" by now, but his work is of a certain tone and taste. While his monochrome landscape and urban photography is rather dark and often inspired by melancholic music, his abstract work lately got lighter and even features bright colors. However, he always shares his very own view on the world through his work and it usually reflects his current state of mind. Recurring themes of his work are feelings of loneliness, sadness, rejection and confusion. Throughout the years his photos have been featured several times as Daily Deviations on deviantART and as daily features on art limited and Shadowness. Some have also been published in the two collaborative charity photobooks "Pray for Japan" [link] and "For Africa" [link] on blurb. In summer 2012 he contributed some of his works to the artwork of the debut album "Former Ghosts" of American singer/songwriter Scott Radway: [link] Currently he's working on another album artwork for a well-known Irish songwriter and is also preparing his very first "real-life exhibition" in his hometown. |
